WORDS BY ESTHER REYNOLDS-VERCO
The spring racing calendar is underway and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate Melbourne Cup in the heart of Victoria Square at the Rose Garden this year. Presented by M One Eight Events, the day will be a sophisticated offering of some of Adelaide’s finest foods and wine, as well as an array of live music acts throughout the day. There will also be a style station, braid bar, makeup touch ups and gents grooming services available to keep you looking fresh throughout the day.
To get you prepared, we reveal our top track-side tips, and fashion and beauty go-to’s to ensure you make it through race day in style.
HEADBANDS AND FLOPPY HATS
Headbands are everywhere this season, from flower embellished to satin. You can wear them traditionally or the latest trend is to wear them on the back of your head like Elle Ferguson and Jesinta Franklin did at this year’s BMW Caulfield Cup.
If headbands are too Blair Waldorf for you, why not opt for a floppy hat instead. Nadia Bartel matched her blue dress with a gorgeous wide brim blue hat, the perfect race day statement.
You’ll be spending most of the time outdoors, so remember to apply sunscreen generously underneath your make up. Alternatively, an SPF moisturiser or sunscreen mist spray will keep your skin from burning. It is also a great idea to pack a travel size sunscreen in your clutch to reapply throughout the day.
The number one rule for spring racing events is to wear comfy shoes! If you don’t have any, make them comfy with heel cushions. Remember you’re going to be standing for most of the day! And just in case, you might want to bring some band-aids as well.
Skip the florals this season and opt for a one-tone dress instead. It’s a more classic and sophisticated look by far. Play with the different materials and details, like lace, pleats, and ruffles to create that drama in your outfit.
