With Christmas just around the corner, we were delighted to discover an exciting new event that will be the based at the historic Hart’s Mill precinct in Port Adelaide. Read on to discover POSH Markets – our new go-to place for unique Christmas shopping!

When it comes to local talent and artistic flair, there’s no doubt that Adelaide has got it going on. South Australia is packed full of incredible artists, designers and makers and now, thanks to a dynamic new project, the creative crowd are set to have a new Western home to gather, browse and graze, just in time for Christmas.

POSH Markets is a weekend artisan market, showcasing independent South Australian artists, creators, designers and producers. Based in Port Adelaide, POSH Markets will be launching for the very first time this Festive Season with its inaugural Christmas Market. Held on December 15thand 16th, the two-day event will light up the iconic Flour Shed at Hart’s Mill with over 50 stalls trading beautiful, unique South Australian designed and made products.

The bold, fresh direction of POSH Markets is no coincidence – Jaqueline Barmentloo and Andrea Christie, the clever crew behind the project, are seasoned hands at curating creative Adelaide endeavors. With backgrounds in Design, Visual Art, Visual Merchandising and Events, the duo met as neighbouring Renew Adelaide Projects at the Port (locals will remember them from the successful Cats in the Loft Galleryand Poppy and the Wallflowers Wedding and Events Floral Stylist.) Over the past 4 years, they have collaborated on numerous projects including Local Business Networking events, SALA exhibitions and Winterfest, before turning their attention to their latest creative pursuit.

“What makes POSH Markets so different is our focus on, not just the quality products designed and made by the people selling them, but the place. There are quite a few makers markets around Adelaide, but nothing in our neck of the woods” Jacqueline told us, “We love where we live and the creative community we live in, and we want to share it with people who may not visit often. There are so many great things happening in Port Adelaide and the Peninsula and we wanted to be a part of it.”

With its roots firmly entrenched in its Portside home, POSH Markets is a vibrant reflection of the revitalization of one of Adelaide’s most historic and beautiful regions. The namesake itself is a loving nod to Port Adelaide’s maritime past and waterside location; in maritime terms, POSH is an acronym for ‘Port Out Starboard Home’.Onboard passenger ships, ‘POSH’ cabins were said to be where the best and most expensive berths were located.

“With our digs based in the former P&O building in Port Adelaide, we felt a real synergy when we discovered that the origin of the word was derived from ‘P.O.S.H’ being written on passengers’ tickets on P&O vessels that travelled between UK and India in the days of the Raj” says Andrea.

“Plus, we believe that everyone deserves to be a little bit posh!” Jaqueline adds.

Stepping into POSH Markets for the first time, shoppers can expect an array of exquisite giftware pieces, from fashion, jewellery and skincare, to paintings, prints, homewares and everything in between. The POSH Markets team pride themselves on creating an energetic atmosphere and visitors will love kicking back and enjoying the stunning surrounds bustling with talented store holders, wine tastings, live art, kids’ activities and mouth-watering food truck offerings.

With the Dolphin Sanctuary at their doorstep, POSH Markets are proud of their environmentally sensitive location and have actively worked to reduce their impact on the unique local setting. Always the first to take an imaginative approach, POSH Markets will be promoting Furoshiki, the art of Japanese gift wrapping using reusable cloth. With live demonstrations and materials available to purchase, we can’t wait to learn how to create our own reusable work of gift-wrapping art!

As Andrea says, “Shopping local and supporting locals is where it’s at. There’s nothing like giving something made with love to someone who you love, from our POSH makers to your POSH family and friends.”

With some huge future plans and no signs of slowing down, POSH Markets inaugural Christmas event is set to be the first of many good things from this innovative Adelaide team. With the wheels already in motion for next year’s event, we’ll be sure to watch this space!
